As a Dubliner ~Late March~

20/Mar

In today's session, I found Mary was the member of famous music family in Ireland（She gave me her CD and her real name was on the credit）！
She said it was difficult for her to remember my name and I decided to write my name on my banjo.
We exchanged the phone number.

21/Mar

I did papers all the day. Terrible.

22/Mar

I wrote essay for the class all the day. I'm done.
I also made new songs.

23/Mar

I earned more than 25 euros in 90 minutes on the street and I stop by cobblestone for a pint.
An drunken guy was there and he talked to me a lot. He asked me the price of my banjo. As I answered complained that my banjo was too expensive but at the same time praised me a lot and he asked me to teach his brother banjo.
Anyway, his local diarect was too strong to understand..

I also met my professor in the pub and surprisingly he was the host of todays session.
It was Donegal session and so I couldn't join but I really enjoyed. I treated him a pint as we promised before and for his playing（He said "Thanks for a pint" in his mail about the essay a few days later）
During the session, he taught me the derivation of  the tunes. We can rarely enjoy Donegal tunes in Dublin and it was fantastic time.
I left the pub and we promised to see on friday（His classes are on Friday）

In the house, my flatmates gave me a piece of carrot cake.

24/Mar
I went to next city to teach banjo but he was not at home. Terrible.

I ate mongolian BBQ after getting back to city centre. I found I was getting better at scooping food into the bowl as much as possible than before.

Today I went to peader browns to join the session with Marin. It was fantastic and drunk a lot as always.
At night, on the way to the nearest bus stop, we are pointed by the red laser and we were really scared.
It might be someone's prank.

I made fish and chips at home and drunk more.

25/Mar
  I killed my 2000 words essay submitted to the university only in a half day. I wrote the essay about the differences between Irish session in Ireland and in Japan. The names of many japanese community  and individuals appeared there.
  I noticed I had the exam of Indonesian Gamelan music after that but It was already late at night.
Oh my gosh.

26/Mar
I had the exam. Though I couldn't prepare for it well, I did my best.
I played on the street after that. I noticed that I have already earned more than 400 Euros by busking.
At night, I joined the session at cobblestone and today I finally recognized all the tunes in the session. I am now the one of the regulars in this session!
For celebrating it, I drunk Sake that Kai gave me after getting back home.

27/Mar

I tried to make pastel, brazilian traditional food, but I failed.
What on the earth is this!!? In addition, it took more than three hours to cook.
My brazilian said it's not pastel but also said delicious as a compliment.

28/Mar
I bought rod and lure in the shop for fishing. In Donegal, I got no fish and I wanna fish next time for sure.The owner gave me other necessarily tools for free. According to him, the fish called pollock is a good target. He also told me a good place for fishing.

I went to Japanese society at UCD and one of the member said he would come to Tokyo next month. He asked me where the good irish pub in Tokyo is and I recommended An solas.

At night, I visited Rag traders. In this pub, the musicians can drink for free!! I finally became regular of the session. It was really good time.  
This session is the best session in dublin, I think, and I am proud of being there.
I also got 10 euros for playing by the costomer. It was like a dream . . . !
Now I can survive in this country by playing banjo.

I left my all fishing tools and lost them, though...

In Dublin, daytime is longer than in Japan.

Today I went to Brady's pub in Meath county, next county to Dublin, and joined the session. It was far from city center but bus fare was free because of my rambler card.

The session was really fantastic!!
First of all, they recognised me because I was already on facebook of Brady's pub.
When I came there last month, I mistakenly came the wrong day and there was no session. Then, dearly owner asked me to play solo banjo. I accepted his proposal and the movie of me playing banjo was uploaded by him.

We played together and they really praised me. Actually, I should have left there within an hour because of the last bus but they asked me to play more. I finally missed the bus and play until 1 a.m（Dearest John drove me to my house 20 kilometers far from the pub）！

The music was brilliant and there were many fantastic tunes. There were also many songs and they kept singing after the owner stopped them playing by showing a scissor to cut the strings of instruments（of course was just kidding）
I also sang songs by Gaelic and they loved it. The man sitting next to me called me Paddy Joe because he said I was more "Irish" than others. I think it was a complement but was so glad. He also talked me a lot and gave me a pint . . . ! Thank you !!!

In addition, there was a really good banjo player. At least, he was the best banjy player I met in Dublin.

I was drunken but satisfied and got back home by John's car. The night from the highway was really beautiful.

Good friday!! In this day, it had been banned to open bars for 90 years. However, from this year, it became legal!! Of course I went to pub after killing my essay.

I drunk with Ben, Marin, and Ihono. Today I heard one song that I had heard in Doolin. I was really amazed then by that song but I didn't knew the name of that song. Today I finally met that song again and got to know the name.
It was fantastic time!

I had a cold, though.

31/Mar
I took a rest today. I made cottage pie because it might be good for health.

My professor sent me information about the next essay and it said the next themes were " the session's atmosphere" and "the experience in the session as a collector".
It seems that I have to go to session and drink more.

Awesome!! This is it!!!!

大島豊「アイリッシュ・ミュージックの森 トラッドからロックのかなたへ」を読んで

前回S・スコット、D・ハストの本を翻訳していた方の本です。アイルランド音楽関係のイベントでもしばしば名前をうかがいます。

　この本はアイルランドの教育制度や政治の歴史的な変遷や、他文化との比較のよって、アイルランド伝統音楽がいかに変化し、受け入れられてきたのかを書いています。ボシーバンドやプランクシティ、ダブリナーズやチーフテンズなどのバンドが生まれた背景には何があったのかを知るためにも、素晴らしい本です。タイトルにトラッド、と入っているのがたまに傷ですが‥（キアランカーソンは、伝統音楽を本国でやるものにはこの呼び方でアイルランド伝統音楽を呼ばずに一生を終えるものも多い、とのべています）

この本のなかで印象に残ったのは、アイルランドにおける音楽のリバイバルについてです。
アメリカやイギリスにあったようなフォークリバイバルを、農村共同体において伝統音楽が受け継がれてきたアイルランドは経験していない、という従来の説に対して、アイルランド国内で田舎から都市部への流入という形で経験したという主張を筆者はぶつけているのです。余暇や金銭面での余裕が生まれて、若い世代がロックンロールに飛び付くようになり、同じ時期にアイルランドは経済方針の転換を経験します。そうした中でクランシーブラザーズがアメリカにて評価され、アイルランドの人は伝統音楽が持つ可能性に気づいた、というのです。筆者はクランシーブラザーズのヒットはロックンロール革命のひとつであったとのべています。そして、そうしたなかで様々なバンドが生まれ、それを土台にプランクシティが現れます。伝統音楽を演奏こそしていたものの、そのスタイル、そして土台にはロックンロールの要素が非常に重要だと筆者は指摘します。プランクシティは今まではなかった楽器（ブズーキなど）を取り入れて、今までは興味を示さなかった層をアイルランド音楽に取り込みました。そうしたなかで、よりリズムを強調したボシーバンドか生まれます。さらに、ムーヴィングハーツがついにこの音楽のエレクトリック化を達成するのです。そして、よりメロディ志向のつよいデダナンが生まれ、ボシーバンドとプランクシティが作ったアイルランド伝統音楽の道をならしていきます。ワールドミュージックの枠へと広げたクラナドが生まれ、チーフテンズがクラシック音楽をベースに、異種交配によりアイルランド音楽を世界に広げ、そしてドニゴールからやってきたアルタンが地方に根付く音楽を新しいものとして世界へと知らしめるのです。

これらのバンドがなぜアイルランド音楽において伝説としてかたられるのか、その背景にはこのような経緯があったというのを日本語でまとめた本はあまりないので、とても参考になります。

また、最後の章でのべられているように、著名なアイルランド伝統音楽のプレイヤーであるトニーマクマホンは、こうしたアイルランド音楽のグローバル化が、その音楽のコアに回復しがたい損傷を与えたと警鐘をならします（先日書評を書いたキアランカーソンも同様の主張をしています）。

アイルランド伝統音楽のあるべき姿については、この音楽をやる者皆で考えていく必要があるでしょう。

蛇足ですが、この本の最後についているディスコグラフィーの紹介が、名盤ばかりで非常にためになるのでおすすめです。

キアランカーソン著 守安功訳「アイルランド音楽への招待」を読んで

この本の著者であるキアランカーソンは、この前に紹介した栩木氏の本に出てくる、北アイルランド出身の詩人、音楽家の方です。この方は他にもアイルランド伝統音楽のあり方について書いたLast night's fun をはじめとした素晴らしい本を書いているそうなので、そちらもぜひ読んでみたいところです。

こちらの本の解説ですが、本当に素晴らしい解説を翻訳者である守安氏が書いてくださっているので、是非本著を読んだあとに、そちらを参考になさったほうが良いかと思われます。キアランカーソンの（誤解を恐れずに言うならアイルランドらしい）ブラックユーモアや、彼の一見過激とも読める主張に対する擁護もしっかりなされています。なので、このブログではあくまで僕のこの本に対する感想を述べていくにとどめたいと考えています。

この本は「招待」とタイトルに銘打ちながら、その割にはかなりディープな内容の本になっています。さらに言えば、一見書かれていることはわかりやすいのですが、その真意を理解するには、アイルランド音楽に対する深い理解が必要になるのです。特に、各章の終わりに挟まれるショートストーリーに関しては、アイルランド音楽を知らない読者は完全においてけぼりを食らうことでしょう。
　さて、ショートストーリーの中で私が印象に残ったのは、ウィリーコリガンと若者の話です。話の概要は以下のような感じです。

フィドラーのウィリーコリガンはそのあたりでは上手いと有名なプレイヤーで、その村のあたりで知らない人はいなかった。その村にある若者がとめてほしいといってやってきた。若者はウィリーコリガンの家に一週間ほど泊まり、そしてウィリーに言った。
「その曲、間違って弾いてるよ」「チューニングも違っている」
ウィリーコリガンは有名なプレイヤーである。彼はすっかり怒ってしまい、若者にフィドルをぶん投げ、お前が弾いてみろ、と言った。そして若者が弾くと
「わしはもうフィドルなんかひかないぞ。お前はそのようにひくんだな」
とウィリーは怒り、若者は言った。
「正直、あんたがこの曲をもう一週間練習し続けやしないかとひやひやしてたんだ」

このお話を皆さんはどう解釈しましたか？私は、アイルランド音楽のリバイバルのあと、都会にアイルランド音楽が流入し、アイルランド音楽のレベルが若者の間で大いに引き上げられたことの例えだと考えていました。実際、現地でも、上手いと思うプレイヤーは、若い人が多かったです。一方で、お年寄りのプレイヤーは、なんだか演奏がぎこちなく、お世辞にも「うまくてきらびやかな演奏」からはかけ離れている印象でした。

しかし、守安氏は全く逆の捉え方をしているようです。守安氏は、このような指摘をする無知な若者は、私たちの姿にもなり得る、と指摘しています。つまり、むしろ傲慢で間違っているはこの若者の方である、という見方です。私にはこの見方が全くなかったので驚くと同時に、新しい疑問が頭の中に生まれました。
それは
「私が上手いと思っていた演奏は、本当にうまかったのか？」
ということです。

アイルランド留学中にこんなことがありました。ミース州のダンボインという街でセッションに参加していたところ、一人の若者が現れ「スゴくうまい演奏」をしたのです。当然拍手喝采！僕は感動して、その余韻に浸りながら帰宅しました。
さて、家に帰ってその日の音源を聞き返したところ、僕は思いました。
「あれ、あんまりうまくない…？」
正確に言えば、うまいのですが、どうも場に合っていない感じがするのです。その時感じた疑問が、この本を読んでしっかり形になった気がしました。

一言で言えば、上手い演奏と、聴きたい演奏は違うのです。

上手い演奏は、間違いなく、正確で、装飾もたくさん入って、ズレてなく、アイルランド音楽のノリをしっかり捉えた演奏、でしょう。
その点ではあのバンジョーはパーフェクトでした。ライブでやればさぞ盛り上がるでしょう。
しかし、それでも、何度も繰り返し聞きたいとはあまり思えないのです。一言で言えば、「生活感」がないのです。

アイルランド伝統音楽は、他の民族音楽に漏れず、人々の生活に根付いた音楽です。音楽は生活と切り離されず、その一部としてあるのです。そのような音楽が、時を経て、いかに大衆のものとなっていったかをキアランカーソンはこの本の中で描いていました。そして、皆がCDを真似て音楽をすることによる音楽の画一化についても憂いていました。
アイルランドは生活の中にあった音楽、という点が大事で、決してこれみよがしに演奏して、表面的な上手いヘタで人を判断したり卑賤を問う音楽ではないのです。例えるならば、特大唐揚げは美味しいけれど、それだけを毎日食べ続けたら食傷気味になってしまうでしょう。逆に、ご飯はそれだけではあまり美味しくないですし味もないですが、それでも毎日食べたいなぁと思うようなものでしょうか（例えが正しいかわかりませんが…）

逆に、僕は次のような体験もしました。
僕がお世話になっていたメアリーという方は、アイルランド伝統音楽界では知らない人のいない有名な一族の一人でした。たまたま路上演奏仲間として仲良くなり、彼女のセッションに誘われた僕は、ものすごく失礼な話ですが、セッションに参加しながらこんなことを最初は思いました。
「あれ、あんまり上手くないなぁ」
しかし、それでも、僕は彼女のセッションに通い続けました。
なんというか、聴いているととても落ち着くし、彼女と一緒に合わせているとスゴく音楽が身近なものとして入ってくるのです。
そんな彼女は結構好き嫌いのはっきりした気まぐれな人で（蛇足ですが、この気まぐれさはむしろアイルランド人特有のコミュニケーションで、話を聞いてないわけではないのだと守安氏は指摘しています）、同僚のバンジョープレイヤーのバンジョーが「うるさすぎる」とよく僕に陰口を言っていました。しかし、その人はすごく上手いバンジョープレイヤーだったので、僕はなぜ自分は貶されないのにその人が貶されるのかよく理由がわかりませんでした。

今思えば、僕はメアリーの音に合わせることをセッションの目的としていたからかもしれません。そうしたコミュニケーションこそがこの音楽の本質で、どれだけうまいかは二の次なのだということが、この本を通じて、今までの経験からわかったのです。

アイルランドではそうしていた僕も、日本に帰ってからはうまくひけるようにと肩に力を入れすぎてしまっていた節がありました。そして、とにかく上手くなろう上手くなろうとしていたのです。

しかし、今回この本を読んだことで、目を開かされた気がします。肩の力を抜いて、しっかり音楽そのものを楽しみ、そして皆の音楽に耳をすまそうとおもいます。

上手いと言われる人より、一緒にセッションがしたいと思われる人になりたいです。

As a Dubliner ~Mid March~

Last friday, Ihono, Ben, and I drunk together in the pub and we decided to travel around the Ireland together（BTW, drinking together, we noticed that Ben knew a lot of japanese dirty jokes lol）
Today we left Dublin after eating lunch at MongolianBBQ, my favorite restaurant, and came to Galway.
It took 3 hours from Dublin to Galway. All we can see from the highway in Ireland are herds of sheeps and the meadow.

We walked around Galway. The best scenery in Galway was the seaside in the sunset. We walked along the beach practicing Gaelic and I played "Galway hornpipe" on the beach.
We also went to music shop and bought CDs. I was recommended to listen to Joe Heaney, a legendary Sean nos singer, and got his CDs.

After going to Mcdonagh's, my favourite fish and chips shop, and bought Haggis, we visited Galway Cathedral. I had visited there before this trip and then I really loved it.

The paint of the ceiling was especially amazing.
Whenever I came to church in Ireland, I recognize　most of them believe in god.

When the sky was getting dark, we visited Tig choili, a famous pub in Galway.
I heard today Brian Mcgrath would host the session. Brian Mcgrath was one of my most favorite banjo player and when he came to Japan, I took part in his workshop and even got his autographs on my banjo. He said he would host the session on Sunday.

When we were waiting for him, Ben suddenly asked me as follows
"oh, they are also Japanese, aren't they!"

They were Mareka and Junji, my most favourite Japanese Irish players!
Unbelievable!!!!!!
Why are they here!?

Junji writes column about Irish music. There are only a few scripts about Irish music written by Japanese in the world and so I used to read it.
Mareka and I graduated the same high school.
I really love their playing but I have never met them in Japan.

I was excited and screamed in the pub. Ben told me that this kind of guy is called "fan boy".

Brian Mcgrath came to the session and I was really amazed and glad to be there. I was almost crying...!（At the same time, I am sorry for Ben and Ihono because at that time I was completely crazy）
Finally, I also joined the session!!!
Oh my god...（now I believe in god）!

Brian remembered me and promised to play together someday again.
Junji and Mareka said today they would stay at Brian's house. Junji said "let's play together in Japan " to me.
A few days later, I found Junji praised me in the blog.

Unbelievable!!

Ihono and I played Irish music on the street and got some.
After we had lunch in the pub at city centre, we went to Inis mor island.
We used ferry and I suffered from sea sick.
All I remember is the silhouette of the island in  the twilight.

When we got to the harbor of Inis mor we were all tired but exited.
We drunk in the pub of the island.
It is fantastic that the pub exists even in the small island like that.

We accidentally met friend of Ihono from Dublin in the pub and had dinner and a pint together.

13/Mar

We woke up early in the morning.
It was a good weather today and we decided to go cycling around the island.
We rent bikes and launched for great journey!!

The heritage built by stones in the green fields firstly appeared!
It was fantastic view and we were so excited that screamed in the middle of the fields.

There were fences of stones around the island. According to the book I read, they were made to protect the soil from the wind because in this island the sands were very valuable. There were rocks instead of sands and to make vegetable, they had to save the sands in their island.

We played on the beach in the island and saw a lot of seals! I had never seen wild seals before and was so amazed.

We had lunch in the middle of the island and bought Aran sweater. Aran sweater is local specialty of Aran islands.

We climbed Dun Aengus, a big cliff, and I made a tune on the top of the cliff.

I played it for Ben's homeland on the other side of the ocean.

We saw a lot of heritages and good views but when we got to the hostel, since there were many hills in the island, we were all exhausted.

We had a pint at night for relaxing.

By the way, when we were enjoying cycling, a black dog suddenly appeared and he followed us for more than 30 kilometer!!

He even guided us when we got lost in the island!!
He disappeared as soon as we got back to our hostel and I think he was a fairy.
We named him Pochi.

Pochi, I miss you so.

14/Mar
We tried to go fishing but we gave up because the rod in the pub was broken.
Instead of fishing, Ben and Ihono made me lunch.
Ben cooked steak and Ihono made だし巻き卵 and both were delicious.

I made Okonomiyaki but it was terrible.
After the lunch, we played Jenga and chatted

In the afternoon, I left Inis mor and stay at hostel in Galway.
I visited Tig choili again and drunk a bit.
BTW, there was Japanese guy called Roy.
He lives and works in Galway.
We talked a lot about music on the way home.
I hope we can play the music again.

15/Mar
In the morning, I played banjo on the street and then left for Donegal.
Donegal is northern city of Ireland and famous for the music.

I saw a grand hill from the bus.

On the way to Donegal, the bus I got on had an accident. It was hit by other bus in the parking area and my nearest window wes scattered.
I was very surprised but fortunately I didn't get injured.
I think Pochi saved me!

I arrived at Donegal in the evening and I went to hostel. It was a little far from city centre but was good. I took a walk around the town and the sea side near the town.

I bought my dinner and alcohol that I enjoy in the hostel. I bought alcohol in the strange orange can but it tasted terrible. I never drink it. No more.

At night, I visited a pub called
My music professor of UCD, whose parents are from Donegal, recommended this pub.
However, as soon as entering the pub, I noticed it was gig rather than a session.
I was stranger there and all people in the pub peered me. I greeted them and ordered a pint of Guinness.
There were an accordion player and a guitarist.
I sat on the seat and one of them found me.
"Would you play together?" He said.

It was first experience for me to play as a member of irish music band in Ireland.
I was so surprised but I accepted his proposal.

They mainly played songs and I followed them by banjo.
They  sometimes asked me to start a few tunes and then I played some jigs and reels.
As the night goes, some audiences also joined the show. They played songs and danced sean nos.
Some people were too drunken and Garda came to the pub to took them home.

It was " Irish pub".

I satisfied with tha fantastic atmosphere and get back to hostel late at night.

I took a walk around the Donegal in the morning.

When I was waiting for the bus, an old man suddenly talked to me and praised me for the performance yesterday. Donegal is so small town that I can meet the audience of the gig on the street in coincidence.

I tried to charter fishing boat and called them but they said they were closed in the winter.
I decided to fish from the sea shore.

I came to Ballyshannon, where Rory Gallagher was born by bus.
There was a statue of Rory Gallagher at the centre of the city and welcomed me.

It is said that it's oldest town in Ireland. I walked around the city and found fishing shop.

I bought what I needed for fishing, such as rod, lure, and reel. According to shopper, salmon and trout are on season.

I arrived at the shore and started fishing.
I was so exited because it was my first fishing in Ireland!!!

I could get no fish, though.

I went back to Dublin by Bus with empty hands.

Happy St. Patrick day!!

They were all green!!
It was so cold today but I went to city centre to see the parade!

It was fantastic that many colorful  monuments went through the city.

All the traffic stopped for the parade.There were many people and it was not like Dublin as usual.

Ihono and I went to Peader Browns to enjoy the session but the pub was too crowded even to talk.
Reserved seat for the musician but we were invited to sit there.

It snowed heavily again.
We planed to go to the session but I couldn't go because the bus didn't come.
I slept all over the day.

19/Mar
I went to Howth to enjoy Dublin Prown Festival.
Prown is famous local seafood from Howth.
In this festival, we can enjoy not only delicious prown but also live music.

I arrived at Howth early and ate cockles in the restaurant.
After that, I bought a pint and enjoyed the show.
Actually, I heard my friend from Peader Browns will appear on the stage.
She played some tunes by fiddle in her band.
I enjoyed it drinking cidre.

The stage was near to the sea and I dropped by the sea shore. It was so windy and cold today but the scenery was good.

In the afternoon, my friend Ben and his brother  Noah came to the festival.
Noah came to Ireland for sightseeing and for seeing his dearly brother.
We went to the pub and had a few pints of Guinness.Ben checked his score of the university on the PC.

After enjoying conversation with local people in the pub, we got back to Dublin city by bus.
The traffic was busy and it took more than 90minutes, though..

We ate fish and chips in the restaurant near to O'connell street.
Next we went to cobblestone to drink Guinness and enjoy music.
I played more than three hours and they also sang in the session!!
They had really good voices and I was amazed by their singing.
Niall praised me and said "why do Japanese play better than Irish!!"

We had a good day and got back home stoned.

スタンリー・スコット、ドロシア・ハスト著 おおしまゆたか訳 「聴いて学ぶアイルランド音楽」を読んで

サークルの寄贈本としてあったので読んで見たのですが、これまで読んだ本の中でもアイルランド音楽の不思議な魅力を感じるには一番の本なのではないかと感じます。

通常アイルランド音楽の本となると、アイルランド音楽の歴史や楽器、リズムの説明、そして代表的なミュージシャンの説明に終止するものが多いなかで、この本はアイルランド音楽の魅力について、他の本とは違ったアプローチで紹介しています。

そのアプローチが、実際に著名な伝統音楽家を交えたインタビューや、現地でのセッションへの参加などのフィールドワークです。
Junior Crehanのセッションに参加した筆者が本人に聞いた逸話であったり、Mary McnamaraやKevin Crawfordのインタビューは本当に貴重でなおかつアイルランド音楽の魅力を伝えるものとなっていました。

例えば、アイルランド伝統音楽の著名なプレイヤーでJunior Crehanとの会話の中で、彼がこっそり庭に忍び込んでダンスマスターが弾くフィドルを真似て曲を盗んだ話が載っています。　
アイルランドではかつて、ダンシングマスターと呼ばれる人が国中を回り、曲と踊りを広めた時期がありました。それこそJunior Crehan が青年になる頃までの文化だったので、この話はとても貴重な話です。
曲を妄りに教えたがらないダンシングマスターから曲を聞き出すため、Junior Crehan は庭に忍び込み、協力者である友人がダンシングマスターに曲を弾かせます。そして、その演奏を庭から盗み聞きしたjunior Crehan は、ただちにそれを覚えてしまったと言います。そして、その時にダンシングマスターから盗んだ「酔っ払った酒の計量官」という曲は、彼だけが弾ける曲となった、というのです。
このような話を聞くと、まるでひとつの曲が秘密の財宝のように思えてきて、非常にロマンがあります。

また、Mary Mcnamara のインタビューでは、音楽一家に生まれた彼女が音楽と共に育ったストーリーが語られ、そうしたなかで、ある面ではアイルランド音楽のコンテスト等を疑問視する姿勢を示します。
Kevin Crawford は、イギリス在住でありながら、幼少期から毎年アイルランドで行われるアイルランド音楽の祭典「フラーキョール」に参加するのが楽しみであったこと、そして、実際に参加したときの（今の彼からは考えられないような）失敗談についても述べられています。

この一連の話を読めば、アイルランド音楽を知らない読者にも、いかにアイルランド音楽が音楽としてでなく生活の一部として根付いていたのかが感じ取れるのではないかと思います｡ある曲だけをうまく弾けるミュージシャンとなるのではなく、日々音楽に囲まれ、アイルランドの演奏家たちはいわば副産物的に演奏家となっていくのです。

また、こうした面白いインタビュー以外にも、歌についての話や、果てには笛の装飾音講座まで、多様内容を網羅したものとなっています。　
何より、本文中に出てきた人々の演奏や歌が、CDとして収録されているのが大変素晴らしいです。中には本当に貴重な音源や著名なミュージシャンによる演奏もあり、音楽ファンにも垂涎の一冊となっています。

最後に、訳者のおおしまゆたか氏は、自身のブログでこの本について次のように述べています。

「入門書はともすれば表面的な話で終わってしまいますが、これはまずいきなりディープなところにひきずりこんでくれます。といって難しい話になるのではなく、アイリッシュ・ミュージックを支える土台の現場につれていかれるわけです。(中略）アイリッシュ・ミュージックは、その奥義に入ろうとすると、ホンモノの愛をそなえているか、奥義に入るだけの資格があるか、試されるのです。(中略）

ケルトを旅する52章-イギリス・アイルランド-/永田喜文 を読んで

この本の素晴らしいところは、アイルランドだけでなく、スコットランド、ウェールズにおけるケルト文化も含めて一冊にまとめているところです。
普段アイルランドに関する本ばかり読んでいるのですが、スコットランド、ウェールズに関しては知る機会がなかなかなく、こうして一冊にまとめていただけると文化比較の容易さの面でもとてもありがたいです。
世間的には音楽の影響もありケルト文化の中では特にアイリッシュがフィーチャーされている感がありますが、こうした本から他のケルト文化に興味を持つ方も多いのではないでしょうか。

さて、この本を読んで改めて思うのは、アイルランドとスコットランド、ウェールズ、同じケルトでも全く違うな、ていうこと。
ケルト、と一つにくくっても、例えばウェールズの賛美歌の文化、スコットランドのハイランドパイプの文化、そしてアイルランドのダンスの文化はそれぞれ全く違う国の文化であるように感じます。
そういえば、スペイン出身の方にガリシアの話をしたところ、

同じケルトでもガリシアとアイリッシュは全然違うよ。もとになってる音楽が違うんだ

と言っていました。

それと、スコットランドに伝わる神話や物語が個人的に非常におもしろかったので、そうしたケルト神話(アイルランドの妖精物語だけでなく）をまとめた本を一度読んでみたくなりました。

ノルウェイの森/村上春樹 を読んで

中学校の時にこじらせて買って以来読んでなかったのですが、久々に読んだらとても面白かったんですね。
なんというか、僕は普段小説にのめり込む、ていう経験をめったにしてなくて、それというのも初心者のくせに頑張ってヘッセやらカフカやらジョイスやらベケットやらに手を伸ばしていたからなんですが、村上春樹の文体は平易でわかりやすくて良いですね。また、内容も日本人の大学生を巡った物語になっていて、とても感情移入がしやすくて良いです。やはり、自分にあった本を自分にあったペースで読むことが大切だと痛感します。そもそも本を読む=偉い！みたいな価値観ってあくまで他者からの外発的動機づけなのですが、外発的動機づけはもともと内発的動機から物事を行っている人のやる気を削ぎやすいという研究がなされています。
勿論本を読むことの大切さを教えながらも、本を読んでる！すごい！かっこいい！みたいなことをうかつに言い過ぎると、僕のように本嫌いの子がかえって増えるんじゃないかなぁ、と思います。
とにかく、小説読みたいなぁ、と思わせてくれる本にあったのは久々でした。思えば苦行のように本を読んでいたので、こうやって本来読むものだよなぁとしみじみ思いました。

内容には全く関係ない話になってしまいましたが、内容も本当にとてもよく練られています。わかりやすくも何が起こっているのか、また一見意味のわからない出来事が何を意味しているのかを考えながら読んでいくのはとても楽しいものでした。昼間っから主人公らが酒を飲んでるのもなんだか自己投影してしまいますね（笑）。
途中途中で演奏されるギターの曲が個人的にツボを抑えてて良い感じでした。

なんだかものすごく浅い感想になってしまったのですが、ノルウェイの森に関する考察はかなりいろんなところでなされているので、ここでは割愛します。

かわりにここでは、直子の病気について焦点を当て、心理学の面か簡単に考察し、どうすればバッドエンドを迎えずにすんだかを考察してみましょう。

さて、直子の病気に関してですが、本文中では精神が引き裂かれる病、と表現されています。ここからは文字通り精神分裂病、つまり現在における統合失調症だと思います。
統合失調症の症状は大きく陰性症状と陽性症状に分けられます。陽性症状が妄想、幻覚、興奮などの症状で、陰性症状では抑うつ状態となり、精神的に不安定な時期を送ることになります。症状としては、描写されていた直子の状態にまぁまぁ一致していると思います。また、容態が途中で急変したのも、統合失調症の急性期に再び入ったと考えるのが妥当ではないでしょうか。
さて、統合失調症の原因としては、遺伝的要因に加えて、環境の変化などからくる精神的なストレスから発症するとされています。また、元々の性格も影響し、内気でおとなしく、非社交的、などの一定の性格傾向があると言われています。さらに直子は、キズキというパートナーを亡くしており、遺伝のような生物学的要因、そして性格傾向という心理学的要因に加え、その社会的要因が発症の原因であったのではと考えられます。
治療法ですが、現在では抗精神病薬の投薬とともに、認知行動療法などの心理療法を行い、さらに社会復帰のリハビリを行う、という流れが主要になっています。

さて、本題に入りますが、結局阿美寮での普通に処置が悪かった気がしてなりません。然るべき心理療法を行って、ちゃんと投薬していれば、普通に自殺する必要なかったのではと思います。
精神が死者の世界と生者の世界で引き裂かれ、主人公の生者世界での生き残りを緑の存在を知って、もう大丈夫だと思い死者の世界へと旅立った、みたいな考察をなさっている方がいて、本当に素敵な解釈だと思ったのですが、直子が統合失調症だと仮定したら、普通に治療方法が悪く、急性期に入って自殺した、という流れなのでしょう（面白みもへったくれもありませんが…）。

僕の好きなバンド、ニルヴァーナのフロントマン、カートコバーンもこの病気で自殺したと言われています。精神疾患の方の自殺率はそうでない方に比べて有意に高いです。しっかりした治療と周囲のサポートが求められる次第です。
